"Apple Tree Man" giclée print
“Leave the last apple on the tree for the Apple Tree Man”. In British folklore Apple Tree Man was the spirit of the orchard. He lived in the oldest tree and if you treated him well he would help provide a good harvest for you. People would leave him the last apple at the end of the harvest and also sing to him and make offerings of cider in early January, a tradition called wassailing. During a wassail people would wear masks and make noise to scare away bad spirits and sing to appease the good ones. This illustration depicts him as a an old man with skin like tree bark and apple leaves growing out of his hair. Heavily inspired by the work of Brian Froud and other fantasy artists as well as 16th Century Dutch artist Rembrandt.
